New Guidance To Improve Sexual Health in Black Caribbean Communities

New Guidance To Improve Sexual Health in Black Caribbean Communities

Reading Time: < 1 minute

Public Health England has published new guidance to support commissioners, providers and third sector organisations in developing interventions for improved sexual health and well-being among Black Caribbean communities.

The population rates of sexually transmitted infection (STI) diagnoses are highest among people of Black ethnicity in England. This however varies considerably among Black ethnic groups.

STIs can seriously affect the health and wellbeing of those affected so it is important that we keep an eye on them.

Priority areas

The new guidance identified the following as priority areas for strategic leaders and service designers , services providers, and third sector organisations ;

  • Raising awareness among Black Caribbean communities about how STIs are prevented, transmitted, diagnosed and treated and how to improve sexual wellbeing
  • Workforce development, including raising awareness and sharing information with the workforce
  • Encouraging more collaboration with local partners and involving the community

We outlined previously how as people of Black ethnicities we are disproportionately affected by STIs and therefore welcome this guidance. We look forward seeing it used by those in the positions to effect change in service provision.
