BAMEStream Offers Free Bereavement Support Service

Reading Time: < 1 minute

BAMEStream is offering FREE Covid-19 bereavement support to people from Black, Asian and other minority ethnic (BAME) communities. The service is provided by Nafsiyat Intercultural Therapy Centre, an alliance member of BAMEStream.

BAMEStream is an alliance of practitioners, therapists, policy specialists, organisations, activists and academia who specialise in mental health and wellbeing. They have come together due to the Covid-19 pandemic to address the mental health needs of BAME communities.

With people from BAME ethnicities facing higher death rates from COVID-19, such bereavement services are highly welcome. This is also highly welcome because the current social distancing guidelines have affected how we usually grieve.

The bereavement service from BAMEStream promises to be culturally competent. This should be of interest to anyone keen to get services that will be understanding of their culture and beliefs.

Who is eligible?

The service is available to anyone of BAME ethnicity aged 18+, registered with a GP in England, who has been affected by a loved one’s death due to Covid-19.

What does it involve?

The service will involve three online sessions of brief emotional support that will:

  • Provide a space to be listened to and access information to help you understand what you’re going through.
  • Suggest and discuss some practical steps to help manage your day to day living tasks.
  • Support you to engage with appropriate emotional and practical support networks.
